Philly Public Bank Timeline

March 21, 2019: Public Bank Training and Lobby Day. Over fifty Philadelphians are trained in how to talk about the power of public banking, then fan out through City Hall for meetings with every City Councilmember. The ask: Create a Philly Public Bank! 

Summer 2019 to summer 2020: Community Outreach. Philadelphia Public Banking Coalition runs a petition campaign and organizes meetings with local groups to build community support for a Philly Public Bank.

September 1, 2020: Town Hall. The Philadelphia Public Banking Coalition holds its first Town Hall to explore the ways a municipally owned bank could address the critical needs of our city. More than 140 people from across the City and region attend this virtual event with City Councilmember Derek Green and leading experts and advocates.

January 28, 2021: Public Banking Legislation Introduced in City Council. After years of hard work on the part of the Coalition and others, Councilmember Derek Green introduces legislation to create a Philadelphia Public Bank along with eleven co-sponsors—a veto-proof majority.

February 23, 2021: Launch of Financing Philadelphia’s Future. Councilmember Derek Green and the Philadelphia Public Bank Coalition premier the first in a monthly series of live, interactive shows focused on different ways a public bank can contribute to the general welfare.

September 18, 2021: Philadelphia Public Bank Visioning Summit. At this summit, stakeholders explore the national public banking movement, discuss the public banking bill before City Council, and develop a collective vision of how a Philadelphia Public Bank can empower and revitalize our local communities.
